THE SOVEREIGN WILL OF GOD ON GOVERNANCE

God in Heaven is on the throne ordering the steps of men, nations, etc. This is true even as we go into the elections on 9 August 2022.

In Isaiah 46, God speaks to Isaiah about the deliverance of the Israelites in captivity.

Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it (Isaiah 46:11 NKJV).

God is raising a man from a far country to execute His will. This man was king Cyrus.

We need to pray for the sovereign will of God to be executed in our country.

God is sovereign:

The doctrine of God as Christians is that He is sovereign

The Lord has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all (Psalms 103:19 NKJV)

But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases (Psalms 115:3 NKJV)

We should pray with understanding that God does what pleases Him. We may have our wishes but God’s purposes prevail.

Three perspectives of God’s Sovereignity

1. Extent of His sovereignity

Isaiah 46:9 is about a historical declaration.

God is not limited. There is no other God now and before. He is in total control. There is none like God. Other idol gods are just a burden to the carriers (See Isaiah 46: 1).

The second declaration is prophetic. He declares the end from the beginning. He has an extent of the future that no idols or man has or can fathom. God has control over eternity past, present and future.

2 Exercise of His Sovereignity

In Isaiah 46: 10, God declares that, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’

God exercises His Sovereignity which stands. He is true and means business. Trust whenever He tells you:

I will order your steps…
I will go before you…
I will prosper you…

Some things may not please us but God will do it because He is sovereign.

Psalms 135: 6 Whatever the LORD pleases He does…

Story of Jonah … it didn’t matter what Jonah thought about the evil people of Nineveh. It pleased God to minister to city of Nineveh… It had to happen!

God reminds and assures us:

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8‭-‬9 NKJV).

We need to accept outcome of elections.

Further, God will bring to pass what pleases Him and He purposes what He purposed.

Genesis 41 is about Joseph’s interpretation of dreams. God had desired Joseph to be Prime minister of Egypt. The matter was established by God. He delivered it.

3. Jurisdiction of God’s sovereignity

God’s jurisdiction is OVER ALL THE NATIONS of the earth

For the kingdom is the Lord’s, And He rules over the nations (Psalms 22:28 NKJV).
God’s jurisdiction is not limited to Heaven only, He rules over the kingdom of men.

‘This decision is by the decree of the watchers, And the sentence by the word of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men (Daniel 4:17 NKJV).

In as much as we have our preferred candidates, God’s will will prevail. We need to be ready to accept the decision made after the elections. We need to manage our emotions.

I Samuel 16: Samuel had invested emotionally in Saul. He had preference for Saul yet God had already rejected Saul by commanding Samuel to annoint a new king.

On Wednesday, wake up, vote and move on. God will do the rest.

Time
God has unlimited jurisdiction in terms of time
– God has a fore knowledge of everything.
– His time is always His right time.
– In all good and bad times God’s sovereignity does not change.

Habbakuk is concerned about justice of the land (See Habbakuk 1: 2). God in His sovereign will does things that are contrary to our will. He will accomplish in our leaders what He pleases.

It is God who can turn around our leaders.

The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes (Proverbs 21:1 NKJV).

Calling

– Let us celebrate God’s will in our leaders not the leaders own selves.

– Let us pray for the leaders to honour God and to exercise justice
– Let our nation be God’s kingdom.

Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15 NKJV)
