Servant Leadership

Reading: Mark 10: 35-45
James and John went to Jesus with a request, they wanted to sit in the right and left in Jesus’s Kingdom. Disciples and Jews of that day had a wrong idea of Messiah’s kingdom as it was predicted in the Old Testament.
They thought Jesus would establish his earthly kingdom and free them from the Roman Empire. But Jesus’s kingdom was not of this world, it was not to be centered on palaces and thrones but in the heart of his followers.
Disciples wanted the high place in Jesus’s kingdom but Jesus taught them true greatness comes through serving others. Organizations, institutions and businesses measure greatness by personal achievements but in Christ’s kingdom service is the way to greatness. You want to be great then serve others.
In the world today our greatest need is true servant leadership. We have many people today who want to be leaders but very few who want to be servants. Their motivation is not service but fame, wealth and power.
Jesus demonstrated servanthood by giving his life as a ransom for our sins. Just like Jesus was motivated by serving others, as believers our motivation in leadership should be to serve others, because it is through serving one another we are true disciples of Jesus Christ.
